Piano manufacturers generally recommend having an acoustic piano tuned twice a year (typically in the spring and fall). Changes in seasonal humidity cause the wood and soundboard to expand and contract, which constantly shifts the heavy tension on the strings and pulls them out of tune.

If an instrument has gone a long time without service, the severe drop in string tension can be immense. It will likely require a "Pitch Raise"—a rapid, preliminary tuning pass to safely bring the entire scale up to proper structural tension—before a fine, highly stable alignment can be performed. This adds an additional $50 per pass to the base tuning service.
